A TRUE STORY

I was walking through a foggy meadow with my dogs this morning, when suddenly they took off barking. I looked in their direction and saw the big furry red brown head of a bear pop up from the thick sage. It began to jog towards me ignoring the little dogs barking in circles around him. I thought of climbing the twisted juniper between us, then I realized how trapped I would be. I started to walk, quickly, in the opposite direction, the bear noticed but   look around almost disinterested, all the while closing the distance.
Ahead I could see a cemetery and I thought, how ironic that I would be killed in a cemetery. Then it dawned on me to me to use my phone. I had trouble taking it out of my pocket while walking so fast. It was not only hard to dial but I couldn't think of what numbers to push ,should have been 911 I guess .Just then an industrial like building  with a chain linked fence appeared over a ridge. "God "I thought, let me get there in time.
I was closer to the building now and the bear was about 30 yards away sniffing and Still looking around almost like a thug who knew he was about to do something wrong .  It was then I noticed the fire engine parked on the side of the building and felt a glimmer of hope.  I was 10 feet from the double doors when the bear decided to pounce. The air pushed against me like molasses and time slowed, the faster I tried to move. I busted in on a card game, where five firemen jumped up, the bear was not far behind. I quickly hid between some lockers screaming like a frightened schoolgirl, expecting these men, none bigger than me, to take my place. There standing on his haunches, now enraged, and feeling suddenly very threatened my pursuer loomed. The beast charged, as a fireman flung a heavy blanket over its head, at the same time another produced a snub nosed 38 from nowhere, and put a bullet in the bear's brain.
I woke with a start, sat up panting at the edge of my bed. I walked down the hall where my wife was making lunch for the kids. I began to tell her what happened. The rest of my day, I thought, should be easy.
